Comprehensive, individualized respiratory therapy

By addressing all aspects of your health — from helping you strengthen your heart strength, improve your diet, and address your mental health to helping you quit smoking — Novant Health's pulmonary rehabilitation can lead to improved outcomes and avoiding possible complications. Rehabilitation therapy can also help you manage your chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) medication and be a powerful treatment for emphysema or chronic bronchitis treatment.

With pulmonary rehabilitation centers available across North Carolina, we make participation accessible. Some programs may be open to the community.

Transformative Care to Live Your Best

Research shows that participating in a pulmonary rehabilitation program can improve your treatment outcomes and make it easy for you to better manage — and possibly reduce — your symptoms. Rehabilitation therapy can help you see treatment breakthroughs for a variety of respiratory conditions. It can also be an option for you if you have had/are planning to have lung volume reduction or lung transplant surgery.

If you have another related condition that makes it difficult to breathe, such as pulmonary hypertension or heart failure, talk to your doctor to see if you could be a candidate for pulmonary rehabilitation.

Your Care Community

You’ll be in excellent, compassionate hands while participating in a Novant Health pulmonary rehabilitation program. You will be treated and coached by a diverse, interdisciplinary team of licensed and/or certified respiratory care professionals, which may include the following. Each provider plays an essential role in helping you breathe stronger and healthier.

A respiratory therapist is a pulmonary specialist with expert training to provide a wide range of respiratory care services. They provide invaluable care in all kinds of different units in clinics and hospitals. For example, they may put in and take out your breathing tube before and after surgery or help your newborn breathe better while in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). If you are in a situation where you are critically ill and need the highest level of care — such as an intensive care unit (ICU) stay — you will more than likely have respiratory therapy at some point.

A clinical exercise physiologist uses exercise as therapy to improve your respiratory health and symptoms. They’ll teach you exercises and other techniques to help you get stronger and work towards achieving a healthy, active lifestyle.

A balanced diet contributes to better respiratory health. Dietitians help you set realistic nutrition goals — that work with your lifestyle and budget — to empower you to make changes as needed to improve your habits and overall health. They may also connect you to delicious recipes, healthy meal plans and other valuable nutrition resources.

When you need respiratory care for a concern that requires advanced training, you may be referred to see a pulmonologist. Pulmonologists — sometimes called pulmonary doctors, lung doctors, or respiratory doctors — are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating respiratory system conditions. Novant Health’s pulmonologists are experts in performing complex medical procedures for ongoing (chronic) and serious respiratory conditions. Pulmonologists may work in either clinics or hospitals; some have additional specialization in pulmonary critical care.

Mental health social workers provide support throughout your care plan. Their tasks include getting background information, updating your clinical records, providing family therapy and preparing you for when you will be discharged.

Psychologists are trained mental health professionals with doctoral degrees. They may offer psychotherapy, propose treatment options and teach you how to manage your symptoms effectively.

Chaplains provide spiritual care and support that recognizes the importance of your personal story, values, cultural, and religious practices, even if you do not hold to a specific religious belief system.
