Let's beat the heat and get out for an early morning hike on the Bluff Spurs trails in the Government Canyon State Natural Area. The route is about 4 miles long with enough topographic relief to get you breathing a little hard, but it won't wear you out.
We'll head out on the Recharge Trail, then go uphill on the Sendero Balcones Trail, then hike the Bluff Spurs Trails back to Recharge. Wear good hiking shoes and bring your trekking poles if you have them to assist on the bigger step-ups and step-downs on these rocky trails.
No dogs are permitted in the Government Canyon backcountry, so leave your canine buddies at home. Kids who are experienced hikers will do ok, but not kids who have to be carried -- it's a little too rocky for that to be safe.
